Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

A standard hollow 8" × 8" × 16" concrete block (CMU) weighs between 28 to 32 lbs (13–14.5 kg) for lightweight aggregate, 33 to 38 lbs (15–17 kg) for medium-weight aggregate, and 42 to 50 lbs (19–23 kg) for dense normal-weight aggregate (sand and gravel mix).

A standard half-ton pickup truck (such as a Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado 1500, or Ram 1500) has a safe manufacturer bed payload rating between 1,500 and 2,000 lbs. Assuming standard 35 lb blocks, you can safely haul 40 to 50 blocks per trip without exceeding vehicle axle ratings and tire limits.

Pouring high-slump fine concrete grout into the hollow cores adds approximately 26 to 30 lbs of wet weight per individual 8x8x16 block cell. When fully solid-grouted, a standard block weighs between 60 and 78 lbs per unit, significantly increasing dead-load foundation bearing requirements.

A standard wooden factory pallet holds 72 to 90 concrete blocks (8x8x16). The total gross shipping weight of one pallet ranges from 2,500 lbs (1.13 tonnes) for lightweight blocks to 3,600 lbs (1.63 tonnes) for heavyweight blocks.

Lightweight CMUs use expanded shale, clay, or pumice aggregates. They weigh 20–30% less than normal-weight blocks, reducing mason fatigue and increasing fire resistance and thermal R-value. Normal-weight CMUs use natural crushed stone and gravel, delivering higher compressive load resistance, water penetration resistance, and sound transmission class (STC) ratings.
