Complete Guide to Calculating Concrete Masonry Blocks (CMU)

Standard CMU Block Dimensions

In construction, standard concrete blocks are referred to by their nominal dimensions, typically 8" × 8" × 16". The actual manufactured size is 7-5/8" × 7-5/8" × 15-5/8". The remaining 3/8" (9.5 mm) is accounted for by the standard mortar bed and head joint.

Nominal SizeActual Size (H × W × L)Blocks / Sq Ft
8" × 8" × 16"7-5/8" × 7-5/8" × 15-5/8"1.125 blocks / sq ft
6" × 8" × 16"5-5/8" × 7-5/8" × 15-5/8"1.125 blocks / sq ft
4" × 8" × 16"3-5/8" × 7-5/8" × 15-5/8"1.125 blocks / sq ft
12" × 8" × 16"11-5/8" × 7-5/8" × 15-5/8"1.125 blocks / sq ft

Formula for Concrete Block Estimating

Because each standard 8" × 16" block face covers 128 square inches (0.888 sq ft), you can quickly calculate the number of blocks needed using:

Gross Area = Wall Length (ft) × Wall Height (ft)
Net Area = Gross Area - Total Openings Area (Doors + Windows)
Number of Blocks = Net Area × 1.125
Order Total = Number of Blocks × 1.10 (Adding 10% Waste)

Pro-Tip: Always order at least 10% extra blocks to compensate for corner cuts, half-blocks, lintel blocks, and accidental transit cracks.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

For standard 8" × 8" × 16" CMU blocks, a standard pallet holds between 72 to 90 blocks. For 4" × 8" × 16" partition blocks, a pallet typically holds 144 to 180 blocks. A full pallet of standard 8x8x16 blocks weighs approximately 2,700 to 3,600 lbs.

On average, 100 standard 8" × 8" × 16" concrete blocks require 3.0 to 3.5 bags (80 lb / 36 kg) of Type S or Type N masonry cement mix with face-shell bedding. If you are using 60 lb bags, you will need approximately 4.2 to 4.5 bags per 100 blocks.

Type N (750 PSI): Medium strength, best for above-grade interior walls, exterior veneer, and chimney work.
Type S (1,800 PSI): High compressive and tensile strength, recommended for retaining walls, foundations, below-grade walls, and seismic zones.
Type M (2,500 PSI): Highest strength, used for heavy structural loads, retaining walls under high soil pressure, and manholes.
